Because of the link between fish and basil Bioshelters cannot use pesticides. Instead we apply IPM or Integrated Pest Management techniques to control unwanted pests. This is a photo of our bio-island. Many types of flowers and other plants are grown here and act as decoys to attract the pests that would otherwise seek out the basil. |

Sticky cards are used to trap insects. The cards are place in different sections of the greenhouse to allow us an overview of what pests may exist and in what sections they are proliferating. The cards are then collected and the types of insects are noted. In this way we can monitor the amounts of damaging insects and use bio-controls when needed. |
